Living on the island Hvar and making top quality wines is, for us, both a challenge and a logical choice. For as early as the 4th ctr. BC, the Ancient Greeks brought the grape vine to this sunny island and planted it in the fertile plain of the ancient town Pharos.
Throughout the centuries of rich and turbulent history, people on Hvar cultivated their vineyards with great skill and care, blessed with the lushness of Mediterranean. Grapes and wine gave them safety, food and medicine. They grew some of the finest varieties in this area, but the challenge still remains: how to turn this richness and harmony into great wines.

Andro Tomić was born on the island Hvar and has dedicated his whole life to wines and oenology. After 20 years of professional training, he decided to return to Hvar to produce his own wines. Strongly believing that Hvar, with its authentic varieties, exceptionally favourable climate and location of vineyards, can reclaim its long lost reputation in winemaking, Andro follows the tradition of his forebears. In the year 1997, he founded a company called Bastijana, with the primary aim of producing top quality wines, and promoting wine culture. Even though a relatively young company, Bastijana soon became synonymous with quality in both domestic as well as some foreign markets and already enjoys a high reputation among wine connoisseurs. Our motto is to try and produce wines of the highest quality and to preserve a long tradition, enriching it continually with new products.

Our new winery is situated in Jelsa, a small coastal town with a long winemaking tradition. We produce ca 150,000 bottles a year and, beside members of our family Tomić, eight other people from Hvar work to achieve that. We are especially proud of our tasting hall, buried in stone bellow the winery, and modelled upon ancient Roman dining rooms.
We have also renovated the wine cellar of our family house in the old town centre where our wines can be tasted within the context of winemaking traditions of the island Hvar.

Prošek is an authentic Croatian dessert wine, made using dried grapes of the finest indigenous Dalmatian varieties. Although it often gets mixed up with Prosecco, Italian sparkling wine, Prošek comes from the coastal region of Dalmatia, which is still the only place where it is made.

In the 4th ctr. BC the Ancient Greeks brought the vine to the fertile plain of Stari Grad and organized the production of wine in an exemplar way. The Romans further improved their technology, and, since then, people have been planting vines in fields throughout the island.
